In the group of photos titled ‘As’ (‘Opos’ in Greek), Vrettos merely holds a piece of trash (discarded plastic, wood, corroded metal) in front of his camera view and shoots what his lens ‘sees’ in reference to the surrounding landscape. Although the outcome seems like a digitally manipulated collage, there is no photoshop involved (as there is none in any of his works) except in the density of colors (the equal of the mastering of black and white in the process of film development). One could say that Vrettos attempts the meeting of 2 different planes of reality in front of his camera, a ‘tongue in cheek’ reference to Comte de Lautreamont’s definition of the beautiful ‘as the chance encounter of a sewing machine and an umbrella on an operating table’.
